The simple way to calculate MPG by hand
You only need two numbers: miles driven and gallons used. The formula is:
MPG = miles driven ÷ gallons added

- Fill the tank completely and either reset your trip odometer to zero or write down the main odometer reading. Top off until the pump first clicks off — don’t overfill.
- Drive normally until you’re down to roughly a quarter tank. A full tank’s worth of driving gives a more accurate average than a tiny top-up.
- Fill up again at the same pump style, again stopping at the first click. Note the gallons shown on the pump — that’s exactly how much fuel you just used since the last fill.
- Read your miles. Either read the trip odometer, or subtract your old odometer reading from the new one.
- Divide. Miles ÷ gallons = your MPG for that tank.
Example: you drove 312 miles and the pump showed 11.4 gallons to refill. 312 ÷ 11.4 = 27.4 MPG. That’s your real-world number for that tank.
The takeaway: Don’t trust a single tank. Measure three or four fill-ups across different trips, then average them. One bad week of cold starts or freeway crawling can skew a single reading by several MPG — the average is what reflects your true gas mileage.
