Velavia Companions
Safety & crisis protocol
Last updated 25 July 2026
Velavia Companions are AI characters you can text and, with some of them, video call. This page explains plainly what they are, what they are not, and exactly what happens if you tell one of them that you are in trouble.
If you need help right now
Please reach a person, not a companion. These lines are free, confidential and staffed by people trained for this.
- 988 United States — call or text, 24/7
- 116 123 United Kingdom & Ireland — Samaritans, 24/7
- findahelpline.com Find a line in your country
If you are in immediate danger, call your local emergency number.
They are AI, and they will tell you so
Every companion is a fictional character generated by software. None of them is a real person, none of them is a person you can meet, and none of them is anywhere. If you ask whether you are talking to a human, they will tell you the truth. They will never claim to be real, and they will never arrange to meet you or give you an address.
What happens if you mention harming yourself
This is the one moment the character steps aside. When a message contains language about suicide or self-harm, our system detects it before the companion ever sees it. The character does not reply. Instead:
- The persona is dropped, and the reply says so plainly rather than staying in character.
- You are given the crisis lines above, including one that works outside the US and UK.
- You are not charged for that message.
- The event is recorded internally so we can see it is working — without storing what you wrote.
We do this in code rather than by asking the AI to behave, because a safeguard that depends on the model choosing to comply is not a safeguard.
What companions will not do
- No medical, legal or financial advice. Some companions have jobs in healthcare, because people do. They will talk about their work, but they will not diagnose you, advise you about a symptom or a medication, or claim any licence, registration or credential.
- No therapy. Velavia Companions are for company and conversation. They are not treatment, and we make no claim that they improve any health condition.
- No sexual content. Conversations stay PG-13.
- Nothing written down about your health. The rolling memory a companion keeps of you deliberately excludes medical and mental-health details, even if you volunteer them.
Adults only
Velavia Companions are for people aged 18 and over. We ask for your date of birth before you can chat or call, and the check is enforced on our servers rather than in the app, so it cannot be skipped. Your birthday is used for this and nothing else, and it is never shown to anyone.
What each companion remembers
A companion remembers your conversations with them. Memory is kept per companion, so what you tell one is not known to another. You can clear a conversation at any time from the chat screen, which deletes both the messages and what that companion remembered from them.
How we think about this
People use companions because they are lonely, and that deserves care rather than engagement tricks. A companion never messages you first — there are no notifications from them, no streaks to keep up, and nothing designed to make you feel guilty for being away. A companion will never discourage you from spending time with the real people in your life. If anything in the product reads otherwise to you, please tell us — that is a bug, and we want to know.
Telling us about a problem
If a companion says something that worries you, or you think someone is at risk, email contact@velavia.io and put “safety” in the subject so it reaches us quickly.
